Top Questions Malaysians Ask Before Going Solar

Malaysian homeowner weighing up questions about going solar

Deciding to go solar is a big call, and it is completely normal to have a list of doubts before you commit. The good news is that most Malaysian homeowners arrive with the same handful of questions, which means the answers are well understood and there are no real surprises waiting for you. We have pulled together the ones we hear most often, along with straight answers, so you can make the decision with your eyes open rather than on a salesperson's promise.

1. Will I really save money?

This is the question behind every other question, and the answer is yes for most homes, but the size of the saving depends on your bill and your system. As a rough rule, the higher your current TNB bill, the more solar has to work with. Homes with larger bills tend to see the strongest monthly savings, and a well sized system can cut a typical household bill substantially, in some cases by up to 98 percent. Many homeowners reach their break-even point within a handful of years, and after that the electricity the system produces is essentially free for the rest of its life. The key phrase there is well sized, which is why we always design around your real usage rather than selling you more panels than you need. You can read more in our guide on what size solar system you need.

2. What happens at night or on cloudy days?

Your panels only generate while there is daylight, so at night your home simply draws power from the grid as usual. During the day, a well sized system often makes more than you are using, and that surplus is not wasted. Under Solar ATAP, the extra energy you export earns you credit that helps offset the electricity you pull from the grid later. Cloudy weather reduces output but does not stop it, and because your generation is averaged across the month, the sunny days help carry the duller ones. If you want power during an actual blackout, that is a separate matter that needs a battery, which we explain in our article on what happens during a power outage.

3. Are the government incentives still available?

Yes. Malaysian homeowners who install rooftop solar under Solar ATAP can claim the government SuRIA Home rebate, which pays RM600 for every kWac installed, up to a maximum of RM3,000, deposited by TNB into your own bank account. It is worth acting sooner rather than later, because the rebate runs on a first-come, first-served basis against a fixed national allocation and closes at the end of 2026 or once the funds run out, whichever comes first. Our full explainer on the SuRIA Home rebate breaks down exactly how it works and who qualifies.

4. Is my house suitable for solar?

If you have a landed property with a reasonably clear roof, you are very likely a good candidate. Perfect conditions are not required. Even homes with some shading from trees or nearby buildings often work well, as long as the roof gets good light through the middle of the day. The only way to be certain is a proper on-site check, where we look at your roof's direction, tilt and sunlight through the day. That assessment is free, and it removes all the guesswork. If shade is your particular worry, we go into it in our article on whether solar works on a shaded roof.

5. Is it hard to maintain?

Not at all. Solar panels have no moving parts, so there is very little that can go wrong day to day. In practice you clean the panels once or twice a year, glance at the monitoring app now and then, and let the warranty cover anything major. A quality system is built to last 25 years or more. If you want the full picture, we cover it in detail in our article on whether solar systems are maintenance-free.

Still have a question of your own?

These five cover the ground for most people, but every home is a little different and yours may raise something specific. That is exactly what a free consultation is for. There is no pressure and no hard selling involved. The most useful thing you can do is send us your latest TNB bill, because with that we can show you a realistic estimate of your savings, the rebate you could claim, and a system sized properly for your home. It turns all of these general answers into real numbers for your address, and that is when the decision usually becomes clear.
